So it was Kaylas 21st birthday, she said she wanted to get railed so I took her to the choo choo restaurant. GREAT PLACE!!! She was a little disappointed they didn't serve booze, but the food made up for it. I had everything and a malt and she tried the kiddy burger. The happy birthday choo song is a nice touch and reminded me of my days as first class seamen on my south pacific tour. Those little natives sure could make a lonely sailor feel wanted.

I LOVE the Choo Choo. I think the burgers are great and the milkshakes are super! Of course it's small, it's old fashioned! This is historic and a great place to take any member of your family, young or old. I hope it never leaves the area and doesn't turn into more parking or heaven forbid - more condos! It's really busy in the summer and on weekends so plan ahead! Long live the Choo Choo! Choo Choo your food!

This place is cute. My niece and nephew love coming here for their birthday, watching the train go by, and getting a birthday cupcake. The food however is just OK. I don't hate it, but I wouldn't go if it wasn't for the novelty factor.

we loved this place! brought my girls here (twins, 5) for the first time last week. based upon the reviews, i wasn't expecting too much, be we were pleasantly surprised! it's clearly been in business for quite some time, as everything is dated. but when we sat at the counter, it was sparkling clean and the servers were super nice. i had the turkey chili (yum!) and my girls had cheeseburgers, which were delicious....because you know i sampled them! we topped it off with cupcakes complete with train whistles. a great day! tip: get there EARLY. it was crowded by 11:30 am on a monday!

Great fun, very basic menu but the burgers, hot dogs, fries, milk shakes and ice cream are top notch. The egg salad and onion rings were more so so, But does that really matter if it get delivered to you on a model train?!? Snood the booths by the windows I'd you want train delivery service.

The first restaurant I have been to that has a train running on a track carrying food to customers. Yes, they only take cash, but that is their 1950's theme. I am a child at heart and I love trains. I love the 1950's music they play. They even have a special birthday song they play for children's birthdays. For those who do not wish to sit at the counter and have the train deliver their food, there are tables to sit at. They have wonderful milk shakes with real fruit in them. I went to a hot dog place the other day and the milk shake their was more like flavored milk. You can get a healthy chili over there made with turkey and sloppy joes which most places do not offer. The staff even dresses in fifties type outfits. They even have a little moving car the children can sit and play in.

I stopped by today with my boyfriend, friend and friend's son. The kid was our excuse to check the place out but I'd have no shame going back without him now. We were there one minute before they opened because we imagined a long line at the door. Our paranoia was in vain since we were the only ones waiting for the place to open. We had our choice of seats and sat on the counter so our food could be delivered via train. The booths on the sides of the tracks also had their food delivered by train, though. My friend's son lost a lot of quarters in their toy machines. Most are empty or so full that the toys don't have room to drop. That was the only con to this place. He really loved the big train, though. Many quarters went to train rides. As far as the food, who could complain?! The burgers were greasy, crispy and cheesy.. with the best darn pickles!! I would like to claim they are better than Culver's burgers and that's close to the same price range. Culver's doesn't fill me up, though. I was tempted to get dessert but I couldn't fit it in my belly. Maybe next time..

This place is incredible! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. I love the concept of the train coming around the bar. I got a cheeseburger and it was sooooo good. I would compare it to an Epic Burger except the bun doesn't fall apart and it's super juicy. Super friendly staff. Kid friendly but I would come here without kids. Seriously!

Gosh, I was surprised to read some of the positive reviews of this restaurant. I found the restaurant to be dirty, the food mediocre at best and the owner rude. We went to celebrate my daughter's birthday, cute idea, right? My daughter placed her straw wrapper in one of the empty baskets on the train and the owner shot out of the kitchen to scold my daughter. My daughter is a "rule follower" so she started to cry. It was an honest mistake and my daughter thought she was being helpful. The worst part of our trip there was that I saw a staff member in the kitchen mixing a batch of vanilla cupcakes lick batter from her fingers and then continue to mix the cupcakes- yuck! We went there to see the train deliver our food which, of course, is cute but the whole whimsical feel of the restaurant is just missing. We will not be back.

My little guy LOVES trains so for his 2nd bday party we made the longish drive to the Choo Choo restaurant in Des Plaines. It did not disappoint. I highly recommend celebrating your bday here. That is if you're under 5 yrs old. We arrived before 5:30pm and just in record time. There's only a few booths that the trains deliver food to and we were lucky enough to score one of them. Just 10 minutes later we would have "missed the train" because the restaurant filled up fast. We were greeted by lovely woman who placed orders for 2 kids grilled cheese and a turkey chili for my husband. Fancy bday dinner! I decided I'd nibble on the kids food and eat later at home. Any excuse to nibble on grilled cheese. It couldn't have been more than 10 minutes when the train pulled up to our table with all of our food. The kids were oh so excited! And everything tastes better when it's delivered by a train so they gobbled up their grilled cheese and fries, which were quite good. My husband seemed to be a fan of his chili as well. Once everyone finished their meals the real fun began. We placed an order for a bday cupcake and an ice cream sundae for the bday boy's big sister. The ice cream was just hand delivered by our waitress (boring), but the delivery of the cupcake made up for it. They started playing a happy bday song and everyone in the restaurant started cheering. Then came the train...with a cupcake (complete with a candle and train whistle). If possible, I think my son was even more excited for the train than the cupcake because he could not keep his eyes off it. All this bday fun for under $25! However, it may being even more affordable next time because we signed up for the bday club (oh yes we did) where kids eat for free on their bdays. On the way way out we treated our kids for a rides on the play train up front and then headed home. I've already promised both my kids that we can go back again for their next 10 bdays. While I can't say I want to celebrate my own bday at the Choo Choo, I can't think of a better place to celebrate a kid's bday.

Small building and small menu but the burgers and fries were really good and the waitresses were very friendly. If you go, know that you might not get to sit at the counter and have your food brought to you on the train. The booths don't get the train service at their tables. It's still a cute little place with good burgers and kids will enjoy it

ii agree with a prev poster. This place is WAYYY overpriced! Service was good and the food is decent but jst overpriced. Fun place for my kids though. $3 cupcakes!!! 2 burger meals (burger, fries, drink) and 2 kids meals (hotdog and grill cheese) + tip ran me $40!!! If the price was more reasonable them I'd give this place 4-5 stars.

A little electric choo choo train delivers your food! The train cars carry baskets of food as the cook stops the train right in front of you (granted that you're sitting at the counter). This place is very small so you have a good chance to sit right next to the train tracks. If not, there are a few tables along the windows. Since it can get very busy, they enforce a 30 minute dining limit if people are waiting. Lots of families with kids come here and love it because of that neat train feature. You can't help but feel happy when their faces light up with joy. Children can also eat for free on their birthdays. Just fill out a little card and give it to the staff. A birthday song plays and if someone is available they will toot the horn along with the tune! Choo Choo has an old-timey burger joint feel. There's a simple menu that consists of various sandwiches, desserts, soft drinks, and milkshakes. Burgers are handcrafted, which is visually apparent since it isn't perfectly round. A nice touch knowing they're not frozen, generic patties. Ingredients are simple (lettuce, tomato, pickle) and it reminds me of making burgers at home or for a cookout. Strawberry milkshakes are bursting with flavor and even has chunks of actual strawberry in them. Prices are reasonable (cash only btw) and the staff is great. All of these things create a wonderful experience that you can't get at many places. A must-try for everyone. Oh, I've also heard the Space Jam theme song play here. Where else do you get that!?

Wow is this an awesome place, back to the 70's! We were there on a Saturday around noon and boy was it hopping! All the tables and counter chairs were filled, we did get lucky that one booth was empty and everyone in line wanted to sit at the counter. We settled for the booth and got our food delivered by a human, if you sit at the counter the train brings your food. We both had burgers and the turkey chili, all was good! If your not a fan and kids at a restaurant or happy birthday playing every 5 minutes this is not the place for you, but if you like a great atmosphere and good food go!

Brought my husband here since our son has been here. Very small place but it's very cute. All the kids faces light up once the train brings the food. The prices are a little higher then normal diners. There is not a lot of parking and I am sure it's always full. The waitress's are all very nice :)

Anyone who has ever like trains is missing out by not giving this place a try. For one thing, you're not far from the Des Plaines Metra station. For another, your food is served to you on a model train. it's like a time machine to a 50's/60's era diner. Burgers and fries are the standard fare, and done quite well. The dessert menu is highlighted by cupcakes, which, after disembarking from the train, one finds they have cute little train whistles on top for you to blow into and give mom a headache on the way home. Lots of fun for little kids and big kids alike!

Don't mistake the Choo Choo Restaurant as a kids place only. Yes, it has kid appeal with a little train car seat and the model train track that circles the dining counter, bringing food to customers. They got serious food that appeals to both kids and adults. First off, their burgers are great. They are pressed thin, grilled crisp around the edges, and a rich meaty flavor you'd expect from Smashburger or Meatheads. Want bacon or other toppings? You can request them and customize it to your liking. Not in the mood for burgers? Try their turkey chili. I never thought turkey chili, which is usually more bland than beef chili, could taste so good. Fries are plentiful, which is a good thing with my younger son. And if that's not enough, try their apple pie. It's a huge slice with a small scoop of ice cream. Sugar sprinkled on top gives it the home-made touch and in the words of my 10 year old, it was "the best apple pie ever." And did I mention hey have ice cream sundaes and cupcakes too? Check it out. Got no kids? Come for the food. By the way, it is best to come early (11 AM) or closer to 1 PM and beat the crowds that can line up past the door. If you got kids, be sure to sign them up for their birthday meal with the Choo Choo during your visit.

This place is so much fun. I came here with my best friend for lunch and even though we were the only patrons not accompanied by a guardian or babysitter, we still had a great time. The decor is reminiscent of a small town 50's diner and if you're sitting at the counter, which I recommend, your food comes out in little baskets on... Wait for it... A train! As a 6-year-old in a 26-year-old's body, this delights me to no end. Our server was so nice. Basically everyone was. The manager and all other staff were funny and sweet and accommodating and incredibly patient, given their young clientele. I was very impressed with the service. I've also been here around Christmas and they decorate the windows with vintage-looking faux snow and lettering and the other decorations are absolutely vintage or a good replication of it. The ornaments and other (paper?) decorations looked just like the ones in my mom's Christmas pictures from the 50's and 60's. And I have to add... As a place obviously geared toward children, the restaurant wasn't loud, wasn't full of kids screaming and crying, wasn't full of kids running around. I tend to get annoyed when at an establishment full of rowdy children, and this was a pleasant surprise! I was expecting some errant cries, but NONE were uttered during my time here. A nice place to eat where you won't leave with a headache! The food was good but I honestly cannot remember what I ordered because I was so enchanted by my experience. This is a fun, kitschy place to grab a meal with a friend... No matter what their age.

Fun times for the kids ! They loved having their food arrive on a train! Food was decent, as well as the milkshakes. Customer service was top notch... I thought I did not have cash on me but had two hungry boys in tow. In order to not disappoint them, the owner said I could just pay at a later time. Not only did I willingly go to a restaurant filled with little kids, it was actually my idea & I actually enjoyed myself! I've never seen children squeal with such delight as at the Choo Choo Restaurant...everyone was cracking up over how happy all the kids were. We surprised Busia & took her there for lunch. Her & Grandpa used to take the Hubs there when he was just a wee tot & she was so excited when we pulled up. It was 11 a.m. on a Sunday so there wasn't a wait and we actually snagged the last booth along the counter - SCORE! If you sit along the counter your food is delivered on the little train. Now, you don't have to be a little kid to understand that is totally AWESOME! Their burgers are similar in style to Steak & Shake but far superior, in my opinion. They were bigger & more flavorful, with that perfect crispy crunchy edge to the patty. Their onion rings are the beer battered style & oh-so-good. And the malt...oh the chocolate malt! At least one person in your party should get one and share if they are feeling generous. They don't have a huge menu, but you can check out their offerings on their website. There's certainly enough to please the kids & the kid-at-heart. Also, they are CASH ONLY & they will ring up your bill on their ancient cash register. And speaking of ancient...they have a gigantic old air conditioner that still works! I just had to take a pic of it; it's floor to ceiling & bigger around than a refrigerator. It's a tiny place & there is probably one or two people cooking in the back & there were two sweet girls working the front. It might not be the fastest service as far as taking your order or bringing over your check but the food was ready pretty quick & being delivered on a train certainly speeds things up. ;-) Oh, one last thing...it was one child's birthday while we were there and they had the train deliver her a cupcake with a candle on it and they played the Happy Birthday song over the speakers, complete with the server tooting their train whistle along with the tune. It was very cute!

How cute is this place! ALL ABOARD! I was looking for a fun place to take my visiting niece and nephews, and my non-Yelper friend (shudder the thought) steered me to this location. I'm so glad she did! It's simply adorable. And I also have to thank Eduardo E for his great review and tips. :-) I agree- sit at the counter so the mini train delivers its food directly to you and there's more train interaction for the kids. No touching! ;) It's a small diner so you better like who you're with or be able to handle them for at least a half hour, but the decor, staff and train make it super fun. The burgers and dogs were good and tasty, no complaints from the kiddos, but nothing too special, though very fresh! I loved me those hot, fresh, crisp yet tender fries, which they happily accommodated my request of no salt. Kids loved their root beer floats and since I'd been spoiling them with sugar all week, I opted to split their floats, with minor protests, but it was just the right amount. Even better, it came with a whistle for each child. Yup, that's fun all the way home, boys and girls. Yikes. Lol Oh, and adults don't skip that amazing apple pie. Omg, classic and yummy. The prices are fairly affordable (CASH ONLY) but probably a definitely more than your average dog/burger joint, but I'm willing to put in a few bucks more for the ambience, experience and smiles on those faces. I think we paid $60 for 5 meals with beverages, and 3 desserts, plus I tipped heftily, as it was well-earned. We even traversed the Des Plaines flooding (spring 2013) to find the joint and I'd do it again. I love the retro checkered decor and appreciate how sweet, patient and friendly the lovely servers were as we decided on our meals. I mean, if I had to wait on screaming kids all day, I'd want these people out of there ASAP- not that mine were screaming; proudly, they all did very well for Aunt Tina. Yay! But even when busy, the servers took our pic and without prompting, called the train back over in front of us. Nice touch! Thanks for a great experience, Choo Choo! When my Dad visits next, you can bet we will be making that stop again. You will know it's him cuz he will be wearing his conductor hat. No, he was never a conductor, but yes, he owns the hat. :-)

Rude staff. These people were only nice during their " save the choo choo" campaign when the city was going to take their lot for a police station. Looks like they forgot to save their customer service! Dirty. They try to kick you out at 30 minutes.If you get your food late they still try and kick you out in 30 minutes. They only take cash. Always an obscene wait. 45 min minimum . There have been about 10-12 people pushed up against the door way and lining the counter space half way up the shoebox size restaurant. Everyone loves hungry people grumbling at their backs, complaining how long the wait is and sometimes trying to bribe other patrons or worse guilt trip them to get ahead. Booths starting to crack and be uncomfortable. Parking can suck and the lot has huge potholes. Filled with screaming kids. Plays the same birthday song every ten minutes and blows a train whistle. The kid ride remains broken for a year. They charge a few dollars for a box cake mix cupcake that's stale. They give you sh*t about sharing food. They give you shi*t about any question or food allergy. The free birthday meal is sort of a scam. There's a minimum purchase to sit down. The fries are obviously those generic crinkle cut things from a Sams Club. No longer putting up with this crap for the kid. Did I mention gross tiny tiny bathroom?

How can you go wrong when your food is personally delivered by rail? My wife and I came here figuring it was a gimmicky kind of place that mainly appeals to kids. Though it certainly does appeal to kids, we found out quickly that it also appeals to the kids in us! We ordered burgers - they were delicious. They far exceeded my expectations. Fries were good, and the ice cream sundaes are perfect. When we were here, it was quite loud since there was a kid's birthday party happening. I would have loved a birthday party here if I was a kid. All my friends would have been envious. The kids were given little plastic train whistles and let me tell you, they are loud and obnoxious. But isn't that what kids are supposed to be? Though the food and atmosphere were great, the prices here are a wee bit on the steep side. It's a little much for us to come here more regularly, but we will definitely return with our young nieces and nephews so that they can experience Choo Choo!

The Choo Choo is a perfect lunch spot for the child or the rail fan in your life, but it's also charming, quirky, and fun in a way most people will appreciate. The egg salad sandwich is solid, the fries are crinkle cut, and their shakes are deliciously thick. Parking is also ample. Let the vintage decor remind you that as this restaurant is from another era, they are cash only. No plastic! Note: there are rules posted. Please follow them. Don't be that guy who derails the train while somebody's pie is on board!

Took my five year old. We were lucky to snag a booth on the tracks. He was mesmerized. The service was awesome. The owner was there and couldn't have been nicer. Our server made sure my little guy had a great experience. Food was good too.

This a cool throw-back place to bring the kids. Just be warned, it's small and the lines are long, especially on weekends and days when school is off. And it's CASH ONLY. (The true sign of a frugal business, because they don't want to pay credit card fees.) Regardless, the food is good, and for adults, I really liked the sloppy joe sandwich. Of course my kids love the trains. There are booths by the windows that are not served by trains, so if your kids want the trains to roll right up to them, you generally have to wait a bit longer to get seats at the bar. One interesting thing I noticed while waiting in line: The owners have a weird fixation on rules, and have signs all over the place to keep you in line. I finally got little X to one, the original at that, train restaurant: Choo Choo Train. The little man was FASCINATED. I did not tell him we were going there so when he saw the train his eyes got big and he grew silent and just watched watched watched the train go by. One thing reviewers are forgetting is that this is a CHILDREN'S restaurant. 100% for the kids. That means it will be loud, crowded, a menu lacking for the foie gras crowd and some unruly children(some random child smacked little G on the back of the head! For no reason! He's only a year old for goodness sake! Control your children people!!). That being said I found the SERVICE to be excellent. And I am finicky about good service! We were greeted with a smile, the staff told us we should wait since one of the coveted corner booths was opening up soon, the table was cleaned and we ordered quickly. No complaints! This is an excellent place to bring the little people in your life. They won't remember the food, the service or the clientele but they will remember the train and that will keep then coming back. We'll be back for X's birthday since "birthday" cupcakes only go to kids who have a birthday that day. ;)

Kids love this place - if you bring them, you will not be disappointed. Seating is first come, first serve - and on the honor system. There is no process to know who is next, etc. Depending on when you arrive, this can be stressful as people hover near your table waiting for you to finish eating so they can claim your spot. CASH ONLY Service is friendly and good. Food is average and what you expect for a burger/hot dog diner. Of course, kids love the cupcakes and ice cream with sprinkles and train whistle. This is worth a visit with your kids, but if you visit on a busy day your experience may be less than ideal given the limited seating.

Arrived at 10:30 a.m. (opening) on Saturday and enjoyed a lively lunch with my sons for one of their birthdays. I wish they took credit card and I wish it was more clear the burgers come with fries already as I ordered a side of onion rings in addition to the burger basket. So we had four containers of leftovers! The waitresses were super friendly and sweet and food came quickly and very hot. It was a very good burger and we will definitely go back near everyone's birthdays since we signed up for the Birthday Club! Lots of cool railroad memorabilia and a fun choo choo whistle. The birthday cupcake and song was a great treat for my 2 year old. Thanks for being in business and giving us a local family owned option instead of that silly chain over in Naperville! :)

My parents took me here when I was little and last week my toddler got to experience it's extreme adorableness and fun. Get here early to grab one of the booths by the track or, better yet, sit at the counter. This is the first train restaurant where a model train delivers your food. I believe it opened in the 1950s and all the charm is still there! It's so cute I didn't even care how the food tasted but to our surprise the food was excellent! This place is totally authentic, you can't buy or replicate this kind of charm. They even have what I think is a real, antique train horn that they toot often during your meal. My toddler had the biggest smile the whole time and we plan to go back for her birthday. The service was fantastic. I wish I had made note of our servers name, she was so sweet. Even the owner walked around chatting with everyone. This is a good old fashioned family business and always has been. Be sure to fill out a card while there with your kids birthdays. They'll mail you a coupon for a free birthday meal. We had the egg salad sandwiches (YUM) and were drooling over the burgers we saw next to us so we may try those next time. If you appreciate the charm of yesteryear and how businesses used to be and want to wow your little ones, accept no substitute and check out the Choo Choo. Also, the Choo Choo is a block from the train so if you can take the train, I recommend it. It'll add to the fun. Oh, if you can't get a seat by the train, the restaurant is small so you'll still have a great view of the train which will only be about 4 feet away. If you get there as soon as they open, you should get a counter seat, though.

Fun place for the kids. Especially for train loving toddlers. My kids loved watching the trains. I would be great if there was a train going over the walls/windows of the tables that don't have the train delivering the food. Our kids had to stand up to even see a train. I was disappointed with the organization of the place. No one comes to take your name to seat you when a table opens up. It's almost up for grabs with the other patrons waiting in line. Staff seemed annoyed instead of accommodating. 2 out of the 3 high chairs had broken straps so I had to tie my daughter into a high chair so she wouldn't fall out. Even after being seated it took 10 minutes for them to take our order. 10 minutes is eternity with 2 toddlers and a baby.

My mom took me to the Choo Choo Train in Haiti when I was a kid! What a treat it was. The trains were fantastic, they had great burgers and the banana splits were amazing. Was just thinking about that time and decided to google. Imagine my surprise to see that they're still around and in the US no less.

Okay, so this is a great place to take the kids if you have time and patience, but if you do it is worth the trip. This is a throw back to the 40's-50's greasy spoon type diners, and it probably hasn't changed since. It's a small place with a train theme that brings the food out on a little train that runs around the counter. Really cool for the kids. Their are only about 8-10 tables and the counter in here and it fills quickly, so if you do manage to get a place to sit when you walk in you better not have a problem eating while people stand around you waiting for your table. And it's only open for five hours a day , so it's crowded the entire time. Also, it's not exactly cheap. A regular cheeseburger will run you $10 plus depending on your tastes. But...it's a surprising tasty burger, at least I was shocked at how good it was. I expected an okay burger that was more about the the atmosphere for the kids, but the 60 year old grill and quality ingredients really make this a top burger in my book. The problem is that children are the reason this place exists. They play a song with a train whistle for birthdays and have special cupcakes for the birthday boy or girl, so it really doesn't lend itself to you going on there just to get one of their tasty burgers in a pinch. But if you know a kid that might enjoy it I'd suggest you go along even if it's just for the burger!

The Choo Choo restaurant hits the spot when running around with the kidos. Tiny little diner with just a handful of tables and a bar that features a cool little (working) train that pulls the food to you. Be prepared to wait a while (esp on the weekends) and don't expect quality food. It's for the kids after all. If you're on the north suburbs near Des Plains, u have to try this joint.

Let's just start out saying this place is a staple in the Des plaines town. My grandparents use to take me here when I was younger so I thought today would be a good one take my son there. We waited like 10 min before anyone even took our drink order. We stood by the door like someone would come and seat us and after awhile we just looked dumb so we seated ourselves.It was like they all didn't want to make eye contact so they didn't have to serve us( needless to say the service sucks). This place is tiny! I mean my fiancé and I were fighting for leg room in the worlds tiniest booth. When I became crowded the line began to back up out the door because there was no place to sit. The food sucked!! I mean it's a tiny menu which is fine but at least make it decent food. My fiancé and I both got burgers I had never seen flatter patties in my life! He said if I wanted a flat burger I would of went to White Castle. This burger was drippy and gross. They are a little pricey but it was worth it to make my son happy. Oh wait he wasn't that happy because the train didn't bring his food to him. Only the people at the counter get their food brought by the train which is really no fun. One trip to the choo choo restaurant is enough for me.

Well my 7 year old daughter really wanted to go here after her play at the Metropolis is AH so we went. Our food came on the train and all was well until my kids wanted a cho cho whistle. I asked the waitress if I could order 1 cupcake and just put 2 whistles on it and she said fine. Next thing I know and older gray haired women I assume a manager/owner comes up and tells me and my kids she can't do it. Really a $0.10 toy??? Then she begins to bully and degrade the employee in front of my family and other guests and almost made her cry. Then we went to pay with my two kids birthday cards they sent to us and the same lady comes to our table and says "now it goes goes from bad to worse". At this point my daughter is crying and says "I don't like the Choo Choo restaurant anymore Daddy". One last problem was when I tried cheering her up so I gave her 2 quarters to buy something from the gumball machines and nothing came out. Ask about it they said they can't help. Ugh balling daughter and left. What a joke. Food was decent though.

I was nearby on a weekday morning and just looking for a cheap knosh. This place fits that bill. Too many reviewers seem to be looking for something beyond what they offer here, run-of-the-mill diner food. This place can only handle what little kids will eat and not much more. It should be good for them and their patient parents. I had a cup of their turkey chili (accompanied with "all natural oyster crackers" by Westminster Crackers, "baked in Vermont), which was hearty and tasty, and a tall cup of carbonated beverage. The diner is small, maybe a total of 6 tables besides the 8 counter stools. There were three groups there, all with kids. They all ordered sandwich items, which gets the show started, as those are delivered out of the kitchen on a Lionel-sized train with customized diner basket gondolas. The train then continues around the inner edge of the counter and back into the kitchen. Because I didn't come with kids and didn't order a sandwich item, the chili was just served to me by one of the waitresses. The entire place is adorned with railroad paraphernalia, particularly those related to the diner's history. On the north side is a kid-sized diesel engine that a child can sit on free. Yes. Their prices are not the cheapest, but everything that I saw or tasted was homemade, which doesn't come cheap these days. And you do have other choices nearby: a modern and a vintage McDonald's, several Mexican places, other ethnic choices, and coffee shops as well. Choo Choo has a "birthday club" that you can fill out a card for a child to get a free meal on their birthday. Some reviewers have warned that the place can get really noisy when one of those parties happens. But since the place is essentially a glass box on three sides, you can scope that out (and if there might be a wait line) before dropping in.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food is here, and to top it off it's brought to you on a train! I think I was was more thrilled by the train and the whole cool diner experience than my kids, grinning like it was my birthday and I was 5 the whole time. You know? Screw the young ones! Go here because you, as an adult who deserves a freaking break in this world, want old school basic diner food done from scratch the right way. They only take cash, so bring enough to drop the pedal to the floor. Because when you go here, you need to try everything. Look at their online menu so you know what prices to expect. Their burgers here are a serious contender to Paradise Pup. They are really that good. My wife, who almost never orders burgers, exclaimed that it was the best she'd ever had. The waitress told us that the beef was fresh and never frozen. Another reason they are so tasty, I believe, is that they use a decades old seasoned flat top grill, which sears the loosely formed patty quickly, sealing in the juices. The crisp exterior is something to write home about. And go old school and get it with cheese and raw onion, cause the balance of onion acidity with savory crisp meat and creamy cheese is real artistry. The fries were crisp and delicious, as were the hand made onion rings. The malted chocolate shake was the most flavorful and best I've had in a couple decades. If they ask you if you want whipped cream on top, shout "Heck yeah!" because it's the real thing. Real whipped cream, not that factory stuff made out of petroleum or artificial guar gum. Those massive cream molecules will undoubtedly race straight to your arteries as the malted sugar high revs your brain to 11, but it's worth it now and then right? You freaking deserve this, the shit you put up with. If you have room for desert, or even if you don't. Get the apple pie, because it's the perfect blend of flaky crust and sweet sour apples and brown sugar carmelization. And get it with their premium a la mode ice cream, because you deserve it. You really do. The shit you put up with.

Wow, I haven't eaten here since the 1970's AND they are still in business! What a day my friend Gary and I had. First we had to drive to Elk Grove Village from Milwaukee to meet with Chicago Terminal Railroad officials. Then we headed to the Choo Choo just mlles north. As we approached the tracks in beautiful downtown Des Plaines, we were greeted with a Metra Meet as an entree to the Choo Choo we could see straight ahead. From the big trains we soon dropped down to the little ones. We arrived just past 1 p.m., and entered the restaurant attractively attired in railroad memorabilia. We had just missed a birthday party and everyone looked happy, several not really wanting to leave. An American Flyer engine pulling five red food baskets ran around and around following the track along the entire counter bringing out your food. How perfect a setting, but how would the food be? Amazingly our waitress was named Jes, the same as at the Railroad Inn in my previous review. And, she was even more amazing by handling the entire restaurant without missing a timely delivery, even checking on us twice in the half fulled eatery. I ordered the regular hamburger and fries, complete with grilled onions, tomato slice, lettuce and pickle. What a hamburger! What a cheese burger! Gary was sorry he didn't order a double, it was such a perfect surprise also adding bacon to his. Even the fries were perfect, complete with a "snap!" The Choo Choo surprise is that the hamburger is scooped out from a large mound of ground beef and pressed down on the grill to form the large patty that exceeds the tasty bun. Outstanding and delicious, one of the better burgers it seems I have enjoyed recently and you know I have been favoring them. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, the restaurant reverberated as another birthday was being celebrated. The excellent speakers belted out one of the world's most popular songs as an adult celebrated their big day accompanied by train whistles as the train arrived with cupcakes topped with lighted candles. This was truly a fun place that will not break the bank. When our ticket arrived, we both said we will be back AND ordering doubles next time. We were both very happy we caught this Choo Choo!

My husband and I brought our grandson here. Our grandson (2 years old) was entertained by the train delivering the food. But Grandma and Grandpa were not impressed with the hamburgers!! The hamburger were the worst tasting hamburgers we ever had! they were greasy, tough, and tasteless. I've been to Choo Choo more than once. The place is small and definitely caters to little kids. It is always crowded (the place is very small) and loud. The food is okay. None of this deterred me. However, I'm not going here ever again. Why? Because the last time me and my party were in there we were completely ignored. I know the servers that were there saw us and made eye contact with us. We waiting a full 15 minutes at our table and we weren't so much as even acknowledged. We finally got up and left - it was insulting. I wrote the business directly (there's no email or form to contact them on their website). They never wrote or called back. I'm sure my business won't be missed. But hey, keep it up Choo Choo and you'll derail yourself eventually.

It's hard to believe today was my first trip to the Choo Choo Restaurant. I've only heard about this place for the last 4 years of my Nephew's life. I'll probably hear about it for the next 6 years or when the day comes for him to finally be tired of trains. Everything about this place from the outside-in is vintage, right down to their antique metal cash register and old fashioned way of cooking a burger. The place is small but we still managed to find three seats at the counter, front and center of all the action. There is only one waitress. She is the jack of all trades who conducts from behind the counter. She has one short order cook to support her in the caboose. The cook doesn't use a bell or yell out, "Order up!" from the window. Instead, he operates an electric train... The place runs very methodically! My Mother odered the $6.75 Sloppy Joe. My Nephew ordered the Kid's Hot Dog. For $4.95, it comes with fries and a child size drink. I ordered the Choo Choo burger w/cheese and pickles. It comes with crinkled fries for $6.95. I asked for mayo on the side to use on my burger and fries. A coke with free refills cost me an additional $2.40. This is the only restaurant that is not stingy with their pickles. To say they are generous would be an understatement. The hamburger patty reminded me of the kind they put out at Steak and Shake, only better. You can immediately tell the difference between fresh and frozen. I'm never going to lose weight if I keep this up. I couldn't resist their homemade apple pie, made fresh daily! My Mom tried one of their cupcakes. She gave my Nephew the working whistle on top. Pink lemonade was enough sugar for a 5 year old today.

I love this place. Yes, I am not a kid, but I still dig the little train carrying out the lunches and all the train memorabilia. I like seeing the thrill in the eyes of the little kids when they see the train come past. It is one of the few places on earth that I don't mind loud kids, because here I am the interloper, reliving a childhood memory I never actually had, The burgers are surprisingly decent and so is the chili and the shakes. I would give Choo Choo five stars, but it is a tad pricey. It is a special place though. We've been here before and we'll be here again!!!

I visited the Choo Choo this past weekend with my two sons, 11 year old niece and 9 year old nephew. My niece and nephew did not care for it at all. My boys who are 3 and 18 mos were in train heaven. The service sucked. There were two people and three tables and they were so slow. You would think we ordered something so complicated. I tried the sloppy joe and thought it was good but not great. I'm a huge fan of Silver Cloud's sloppy joe so this one has nothing on it. The cheeseburger my niece had was great. Juicy, seasoned perfectly and the bread was fantastic,. Grilled cheese for the boys was good. It was definitely over priced. Cupcakes tasted like they were duncan hines box made. I probably won't go back.

What a great family restaurant! I absolutely loved coming here as a kid. I loved how the train brought me my food when I was sitting at the counter. And of course the food was good too, but when you're a kid a model train bringing you your food is so much cooler. My mom took us here when we were kids. It was always a fun occasion and we'd always sit along the tracks. Going back now that I'm older I would say that this place attracts people looking to check it out at least one. Still slightly overpriced in my opinion but good for a nostalgic trip down memory lane. This is a cute place although it's very small and rather cramped and VERY old school. The counter where the train circles only seats about a dozen people and the booths behind it each seat four VERY tightly. You're shoulder to shoulder with the person next to you and you have to organize your feet in a criss-cross pattern because there's just nowhere else to put them. The main reason we went was to check it out and take my niece and nephew who are 2 and 4.5. They loved the train. The food was okay, but nothing to come running back for. I definitely think this is a "been there, done that" type of place. I can check it off my list now, but probably won't be heading back there any time soon.

My son is train obsessed. When I read that this place served food on a train, we scheduled a playdate to meet up here. Their hours are a bit odd and we showed up at 10:45am (15 minutes after opening on a Saturday) and quickly found seats at the counter - the whole restaurant has seven booths that seat 4 and 6 counter seats. By 11am, the entire restaurant was packed. The train is a wonderful touch for those train obsessed kids like my son who screamed CHOO CHOO every time the train came out with food. The onion rings, turkey chili and milk shakes get a thumbs up for me. Otherwise, the food is pretty typical diner food so don't go for a gourmet dining experience. We came back again for the Choo Choo Birthday club where the kid's entree was free and got one of their birthday cupcakes with a candle and train whistle on top. They play Happy Birthday over the loudspeakers and our son had the happiest goofiest grin on his face. Free parking lot and lastly but most importantly, CASH ONLY.

A classic old fashioned diner with a twist - if you are sitting at the counter, your burger is served to you on an electric train. The track actually runs the length of the counter and makes a loop through the kitchen. It's mesmerizing. And then the burgers - homemade, totally homemade - they are shaped like amoebas so that you know they are made from scratch, no two are alike. Crispy crinkle fries, friendly waitresses, and if you are lucky enough to go before they've run out of their homemade Ghirardelli brownies......it's nirvana.

It's not often that I would enter a place full of screaming toddlers who are constantly blowing train whistles, but I'm on an unofficial mission to try every mid-20th-century-or-earlier greasy spoon diner in the country. If you are like me, you will be initially disconcerted when you enter the joint and discover that you are the only adult without a half a dozen young'uns in tow, but if you overcome your horror and order a burger, you will soon be in greasy grill heaven. The burgers are almost 'steak-&-shake'y in nature... the kid's hotdogs were simply hot-dogey I guess. It's the train they all come to see. The choo-choo experience is better if you sit at the lunch counter but if it's crowded (like Sunday @ noon) and you get seated in one of the other booths, it's not that bad.

I have been coming to Choo-Choo for more than 30 years, and it's safe to say that very little has changed. The Lionel-scale train circles from the kitchen to your seat at the counter, carrying your order on a model flatbed car. Kids love it, and so do I. I doubt the food will win any awards, but that's not why you step inside. It's a very small restaurant, filled with railroad memorabilia. I loved the chili and fries, and hamburgers generally do not disappoint.

The concept and the fact that this is probably the oldest train themed restaurant in the Chicagoland area and is also a historic spot in Des Plaines is great. But I've definitely experienced better at All Aboard Diner in Downers Grove. The first thing I noticed off the bat, it is lacking in space. So it doesn't take many people to crowd this place. And believe it or not, on the menu it states that they enforce a 30 minute eating time at times when there is a wait for seating. Second, as soon as I walked it looked dingy/unclean. In a place that is regularly frequented by mainly children you really need to stay on top of wiping down countertops and sweeping the floors. The waitress and food was good, though I was surprised that we spent $30 for two BLT's, two cups of chili, two pops and a kids meal. I was also turned off at the fact of them adding tip (supposedly because we were a party of 6+) yet, my party split between two tables and had two separate bills. During the meal I was perturbed because on two occasions they propped open the rear door for some reason, and the freezing air was blowing right at me and my food. The 2nd time the door was open for several minutes before it was finally closed and I was getting irritated. Towards the end of the meal there were people coming in looking for seats and stalking people for seats. There was a large party of kids that arrived all at once, and those kids were all over the place and not well controlled. Not the diners fault, but you can imagine how annoying unruly kids can be in a very small place. I went to at least try it. But I will definitely not be back.

This review is written from an adult's perspective ... The food here is really bad. I think the main attraction here is the train that roams around the restaurant, which is great for kids until they grow old enough to realize that the food is of poor quality. In other words, until they have tried McDonald's and have grown tired of model trains. The food reminds me of really bad public school cafeteria food. My recommendation to the owners: 1) Focus on your food. That is what will keep customers coming back. It should be better than any fast food hamburger joint. That should be your minimum standard. 2) The vintage look is the right idea, but the place really needs to be remodeled. The economy is bad, but you need to put money in to get money out.

I finally went here... though I've lived near it for more than half my life, I'd never been in. It's a great place to go with the kids, but be prepared to wait for a table when you get there, and mind you there's no place to wait, so you're standing around the door until someone leaves. Now, don't get me wrong, my kids really enjoy the experience, and if you've never been there I recommend sitting at the counter if you can so that the kids get the effect of the model train delivering their food. As for the food, the turkey Chili is some of the best I've ever had! The rest, while it's okay I do think it's a bit on the pricey side for much frequency.

I love this place. I have come on Saturdays and during the week. Obviously go on a non Saturday or kiddie school holiday at lunch time. My sister and I come here every time she is in town. I have never waited more than 10 min for a table and only a few minutes more to sit at the bar, yes, I'm 26 years old and wait to sit at the bar. Milkshakes are my favorite and are huge. I usually take half in a to-go-cup. I think its so much fun when the train delivers the food. Sure its small but really, the place was built in the 50's. If you want a lot of fun young or old I would come here. Just be prepared, its no McDonald's and you will be most likely having to wait for a table but go with it. You obviously come here for a reason. tip: parking in the lot is always crazy, if its full just park down the street. Never a problem and easy in and out. Also the Choo Choo is cash only.

1st off if you don't have children and you're going here for lunch you've got issues. It's clear the attraction is the electric choo choo and you're going so your kids can enjoy it, not you. That said we had a miserable experience. It was unseasonably warm for Nov and the south side of the all-glass restaurant has no shades. I was baking faster than our food arrived. Service was slow and the food took awhile but for a grand total of $23 for two burgers with fries and Carter's grilled cheese it was a cheap way to entertain a child for lunch. The burgers weren't awful either like some others said. They were as good as anything you get at a greasy spoon diner and maybe a little better even. My 21 month old son really enjoyed it. He would barely sit in his booster to get a better look at the train. I felt bad that we had to "rush" out because the sun was so unbearable and his little baby sister was in a car seat so we had to get her outside for some fresh air. But bottom line, if you have kids this will keep them engaged for an entire meal. That's not easy to do. If you just want a hamburger there's a Cheeseburger in paradise around the corner.

Read many bad things about it before I went, so I was not very suprisingly disappointed. It is very very tiny. If you don't sit on the high stool near the counter, you can not really see the train. The train tracks are very small too. When I went the train was not working, so we basicly paid $25 on some onion rings and burger...the kids did not enjoy it. Remember you go there to look at the trains not for the food.

I went here as a kid and couldn't wait to take my son. We have been here with him three times now. The food was way better than expected. It's total old school, diner like food. I have had the burger and turkey chili, both were top notch. The onion rings are also excellent and don't miss desert, everything is home made. Shakes, brownies and cupcakes are all yum! I can't wait to try the Sloppy Joe's also. The train brings your food only if you can get a counter seat. If you don't want to wait, go on one of the weeknights when they are open until eight. A fun, reasonable place for the kids that serves awesome food and doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't.

Yes there is a train here. It runs along the counter and carries the baskets with your sandwich in it. There is also a little train/car that your kid can sit in and bobble up and down while you are waiting. This is basically a sandwich and shake restaurant/diner, so don' t get your hopes up for some fine cuisine. Everyone here goes for the train. The restaurant is very small, like 16 booths and some counter seating. There are 2 booths on either side of the counter and each seats 3, 4 if you squeeze. The other 8 booths are small, to get 6 in them is not a good idea. The wait here can be long and it depends on if you want to sit near the train or in a booth further away. There's no formal seating process, it's every man/woman/child for himself and you need to talk amongst yourselves to find out who is waiting for what. There is a parking lot behind the diner which fits maybe 12 cars, so keep that in mind. They also only take cash and personal checks, but there is a Walgreen's nearby with a cash machine. All in all, it's fun for your train lover, but there's no Thomas here, and not much to look at besides the train at the counter. The cupcakes are yummy and have a train whistle on them, but beware, it's very annoying to hear that over and over and over again!

Like most parents of little boys, my 2.5 year old son is train obsessed, so when I heard of the Choo Choo Restaurant, I knew it had to be placed at the top of our "To Do" list. We got there around noon on a Wednesday and I honestly didn't think there would be too many people there- WRONG! Thankfully, the wait wasn't anything like what I have read from others and we were seated in less than 10 minutes. (Be aware that there is no real "waiting area" so you may find yourself standing outside, so if the weather isn't the best be sure to pack an umbrella, coat, etc.) Because it is first come first serve, patrons have the option of taking one of the 6 or 7 booths or sitting at the counter, though it's to my understanding that seats at the counter are coveted so if they are busy be prepared to wait even longer. Personally, we sat along the front window and we could still see the "food train" very easily. My son had a cheese burger kids meal and completely devoured the entire thing. The meal was the burger, fries, and a refillable drink, and I think I paid $6. I ordered the grilled ham and cheese on 7-grain bread and a cup of chili because I didn't think my sandwich would come with fries. The grilled ham and cheese was good- not exceptional but what can you expect when you order grilled ham and cheese?! - and I would definitely order it again. What really stood out was the turkey chili. The chili was meaty, served piping hot, and left me wanting more- A LOT MORE! For dessert we shared a train whistle cupcake (the cupcake has a train whistle that your kids can blow) and it was seriously the most moist cupcake I have ever eaten! Nothing spectacular, but still really good- especially the extra frosting that was on the top! Our entire bill was $23 and we had more food than we could have eaten. Be advised however that this is a CASH ONLY establishment, so be prepared. The place is loud (between the train whistles that every kid seemingly has and the repeated rounds of "Happy Birthday" it is almost frenetic), teaming with children, and busy, but it is also all of the things that it promises- great food, great service, good atmosphere that's kid friendly, and a throwback to a different era. Will we be repeat customers? WITHOUT A DOUBT! Perhaps next time we will be able to escape without a train whistle that I can still hear someone blowing softly in to as he goes to bed tonight with a happy, new memory... On second thought, a cupcake and the requisite whistle is a must have anytime you visit the Choo Choo!

Hot Dogs and Hamburgers are fine, hard to mess up. Overpriced, usually a wait with no room to wait. But, the kids love it. Owner was a bit stingy in handing out a cheap plastic train whistle. When I asked for an extra one she replied, "You get one with dessert" I thought she didn't understand that I was asking for just one more whistle for my daughter who didn't have a cupcake. She repeated, "You get one with a dessert." I suppose that was her way of saying - No free whistles here. She saw we had a chocolate shake on our table and then got us a second whistle. The whistle is worth about $.03. geesh.

My son and I are regulars at this place. It's basic diner food but super yummy. I LOVE their Francheesy. It's a heart attack on a plate but it's so good. It's a huge hotdog, slit down the center and stuffed with cheese and a thick piece of bacon. It's good beyond words. I rarely deviate from this when we go but I have had the grilled chicken sandwich and it was pretty darn good as well. Their turkey chili is amazing and you absolutely have to get a cupcake when you're there... oh and a shake! Needless to say, this is not the place to be if you're on a diet but it's good old fashioned comfort food at it's finest. Oh yeah, the trains. Kids love them and it is pretty cute. How could you not love a train with baskets attached to it that bring your food around. A word of caution. This place can get REALLY loud during crowded times so if you're prone to migraines or hostility when placed in a small, crowded room with a bunch of rugrats with loud music blaring, this probably isn't a good place for you. A little tip for ya. If you can, get there no later than 11. I know this is an early lunch for some but you'll be guaranteed to get a table near the train or a seat at the counter. Once 11:30 approaches you'll have to wait and if you come later than that, expect a line outside. Oh and they do NOT accept credit/debit cards. Cash or check only.

ive lived in des plaines for 2 years and pass the choo choo almost every day, yet never went in. i knew my son would love it, so i decided to stop in for lunch. first of all, it was a crowded nightmare. i assumed it was a seat yourself type of place and found a booth in the corner. the resturant was packed to the gills...i believe there was a little boy celebrating his birthday with about 20 of his little friends. they had 3 booths for their party and it was pure chaos. kids running, blowing their cupcake whistles, and climbing over the seats. the service was prompt and the food was nothing to write home about. greasy, but edible. i was suprised to see it was cash or check...dont most places take credit cards nowadays? to a sane adult, this place was a crowded nightmare, but through the eyes of my 3 year old, it was akin to disney world. he loved the train that circled the counter to bring the diners their food, the cupcakes with the train whistles on top and the 'happy birthday' song they play. he was just in awe of the whole experience....and that is why we went. we will certainly not be returning to the choo choo for the food...yet for the experience and the joy that it brought my son.

I was prepared not to like this place. The attraction is a model train that runs the length of the counter, back into the kitchen, and delivers food in baskets. Always thought it was too cutesy a concept. But, to my surprise, it's rather charming: a throwback to the small '50s-era diner (perhaps b/c it was opened in 1951). Menu is basic: burgers, hot dogs, some sandwiches and desserts. My cheeseburger was decent, and tasty fries were salty and plentiful. The ice cream sundae was simple but good. Service was very efficient: had my order in around 10 min. But the food is beside the point here. Choo Choo is like dinner theatre for the 10 and under set. Every child is given a cardboard train conductors hat. I saw one boy, maybe 4 or 5, kneel on his seat for the entire meal - the better to watch the train come 'round. You wouldn't think such a simple novelty would capture kids' attention. But it did! Lots of sprites, just grinning ear to ear. If you come on a Saturday, be prepared to wait (and to vacate your booth in 30 min. - a sign notes that management strictly enforces that time limit during busy periods). From the time my daughter was 2 until maybe a year ago we LOVED the Choo Choo. Talk about great "mom and pop" burger joint. Plus the train theme is cool. Menu is limited but food was really good. Plus if you can get the counter its really fun to have the train bring you your food. Negatives - limited seating and only take cash. Also unless you want to wait in line for a while to sit down, go early on the weekend (before 11:30am) and definitely not right after school lets out for the summer (again, limited seating thing). But once you do sit, the service and food is ultra fast. I also noted some people think it was over priced. I don't think $30 for the 3 of us to have lunch was bad, especially compared to a place like Five Guys. Plus any time you add on *malts* to a meal so too the price. No, its not McDonalds prices, but you are also paying for the experience. And the burgers are 10 times better then McDs So great burgers, awesome malts, fun experience. Its just VERY popular among families with kids so either figure out an "off" time or be prepared to wait in a long line that could go out the door and around the building.

I have been going to this restaurant for years. My father even took me when I was a child and I am 47 years old now. It is a cute idea, the train delivers you food to you. I went there one day and got there at 10:30a, the time they open so I wouldn't have to wait in a long line. We sat down, I didn't even take off my coat and they were asking me what I wanted to order. I was with my 4 year old daughter. I quickly ordered. My daughter eats slowly. She was still eating her hotdog and they told me we only had 30 minutes total and we would have to take our food to go!! She didn't even eat her birthday cupcake yet. I was furious. My bill was over $20 for the two of us. Also, I wanted to pay with a debit card. They don't take credit or debit. I then had to walk to find a cash station to pay my bill. I didn't want to take my car because the parking lot is so small and was full so I didn't want to move my car. The weather was 19 degrees. I will never go there again.The owner here has alot to learn about being a business owner. So, if you go there, plan on eating fast because you will be kicked out in 30 minutes!!! I also want to add that there were water stains all over the ceiling. The building is in need of repair. It makes me wonder if there is mold growing in there somewhere. I went here as a kid , remember digging it. Passed by it with my kid , decided to take him here. The gag here is that it is a really old diner and it has a model train that brings your order to you. I expected nothing as far as food quality and was pleasantly surprised. The burgers were really good , the turkey chili surprisingly good. This place is tiny , I'd be surprised if it seats more than 20 people , and it was full both times I was here recently. You might have to wait for a seat. The prices were pretty high for a diner , I guess you're paying for the electricity for the train. If you're with kids , or just looking for someplace different , give this place a shot.

Food is homemade fair, suited to kids tastes, but parents can always find themselves satisfied too. Turkey chili is my fav, with a grilled cheese on seven grain bread taking 2nd place.(I usually order both.). My kids like everything on the menu. Aside from that atmosphere is King! Trains that bring your food, that's just awesome!

My son is train obsessed. When I read that this place served food on a train, we scheduled a playdate to meet up here. Their hours are a bit odd and we showed up at 10:45am (15 minutes after opening on a Saturday) and quickly found seats at the counter - the whole restaurant has seven booths that seat 4 and 6 counter seats. By 11am, the entire restaurant was packed. The train is a wonderful touch for those train obsessed kids like my son who screamed CHOO CHOO every time the train came out with food. The onion rings, turkey chili and milk shakes get a thumbs up for me. Otherwise, the food is pretty typical diner food so don't go for a gourmet dining experience. We came back again for the Choo Choo Birthday club where the kid's entree was free and got one of their birthday cupcakes with a candle and train whistle on top. They play Happy Birthday over the loudspeakers and our son had the happiest goofiest grin on his face. Free parking lot and lastly but most importantly, CASH ONLY.

A classic old fashioned diner with a twist - if you are sitting at the counter, your burger is served to you on an electric train. The track actually runs the length of the counter and makes a loop through the kitchen. It's mesmerizing. And then the burgers - homemade, totally homemade - they are shaped like amoebas so that you know they are made from scratch, no two are alike. Crispy crinkle fries, friendly waitresses, and if you are lucky enough to go before they've run out of their homemade Ghirardelli brownies......it's nirvana.

It's not often that I would enter a place full of screaming toddlers who are constantly blowing train whistles, but I'm on an unofficial mission to try every mid-20th-century-or-earlier greasy spoon diner in the country. If you are like me, you will be initially disconcerted when you enter the joint and discover that you are the only adult without a half a dozen young'uns in tow, but if you overcome your horror and order a burger, you will soon be in greasy grill heaven. I have been coming to Choo-Choo for more than 30 years, and it's safe to say that very little has changed. The Lionel-scale train circles from the kitchen to your seat at the counter, carrying your order on a model flatbed car. Kids love it, and so do I. I doubt the food will win any awards, but that's not why you step inside. It's a very small restaurant, filled with railroad memorabilia. I loved the chili and fries, and hamburgers generally do not disappoint.

The concept and the fact that this is probably the oldest train themed restaurant in the Chicagoland area and is also a historic spot in Des Plaines is great. But I've definitely experienced better at All Aboard Diner in Downers Grove. The first thing I noticed off the bat, it is lacking in space. So it doesn't take many people to crowd this place. And believe it or not, on the menu it states that they enforce a 30 minute eating time at times when there is a wait for seating. Second, as soon as I walked it looked dingy/unclean. In a place that is regularly frequented by mainly children you really need to stay on top of wiping down countertops and sweeping the floors. The waitress and food was good, though I was surprised that we spent $30 for two BLT's, two cups of chili, two pops and a kids meal. I was also turned off at the fact of them adding tip (supposedly because we were a party of 6+) yet, my party split between two tables and had two separate bills. During the meal I was perturbed because on two occasions they propped open the rear door for some reason, and the freezing air was blowing right at me and my food. The 2nd time the door was open for several minutes before it was finally closed and I was getting irritated. Towards the end of the meal there were people coming in looking for seats and stalking people for seats. There was a large party of kids that arrived all at once, and those kids were all over the place and not well controlled. Not the diners fault, but you can imagine how annoying unruly kids can be in a very small place. I went to at least try it. But I will definitely not be back.

This review is written from an adult's perspective ... The food here is really bad. I think the main attraction here is the train that roams around the restaurant, which is great for kids until they grow old enough to realize that the food is of poor quality. In other words, until they have tried McDonald's and have grown tired of model trains. The food reminds me of really bad public school cafeteria food. My recommendation to the owners: 1) Focus on your food. That is what will keep customers coming back. It should be better than any fast food hamburger joint. That should be your minimum standard. 2) The vintage look is the right idea, but the place really needs to be remodeled. The economy is bad, but you need to put money in to get money out.

I finally went here... though I've lived near it for more than half my life, I'd never been in. It's a great place to go with the kids, but be prepared to wait for a table when you get there, and mind you there's no place to wait, so you're standing around the door until someone leaves. Now, don't get me wrong, my kids really enjoy the experience, and if you've never been there I recommend sitting at the counter if you can so that the kids get the effect of the model train delivering their food. As for the food, the turkey Chili is some of the best I've ever had! The rest, while it's okay I do think it's a bit on the pricey side for much frequency.

So it was Kaylas 21st birthday, she said she wanted to get railed so I took her to the choo choo restaurant. GREAT PLACE!!! She was a little disappointed they didn't serve booze, but the food made up for it. I had everything and a malt and she tried the kiddy burger. The happy birthday choo song is a nice touch and reminded me of my days as first class seamen on my south pacific tour. Those little natives sure could make a lonely sailor feel wanted.

I love this place. I have come on Saturdays and during the week. Obviously go on a non Saturday or kiddie school holiday at lunch time. My sister and I come here every time she is in town. I have never waited more than 10 min for a table and only a few minutes more to sit at the bar, yes, I'm 26 years old and wait to sit at the bar. Milkshakes are my favorite and are huge. I usually take half in a to-go-cup. I think its so much fun when the train delivers the food. Sure its small but really, the place was built in the 50's. If you want a lot of fun young or old I would come here. Just be prepared, its no McDonald's and you will be most likely having to wait for a table but go with it. You obviously come here for a reason. tip: parking in the lot is always crazy, if its full just park down the street. Never a problem and easy in and out. Also the Choo Choo is cash only.

1st off if you don't have children and you're going here for lunch you've got issues. It's clear the attraction is the electric choo choo and you're going so your kids can enjoy it, not you. That said we had a miserable experience. It was unseasonably warm for Nov and the south side of the all-glass restaurant has no shades. I was baking faster than our food arrived. Service was slow and the food took awhile but for a grand total of $23 for two burgers with fries and Carter's grilled cheese it was a cheap way to entertain a child for lunch. The burgers weren't awful either like some others said. They were as good as anything you get at a greasy spoon diner and maybe a little better even. My 21 month old son really enjoyed it. He would barely sit in his booster to get a better look at the train. I felt bad that we had to "rush" out because the sun was so unbearable and his little baby sister was in a car seat so we had to get her outside for some fresh air. But bottom line, if you have kids this will keep them engaged for an entire meal. That's not easy to do. If you just want a hamburger there's a Cheeseburger in paradise around the corner.

Read many bad things about it before I went, so I was not very suprisingly disappointed. It is very very tiny. If you don't sit on the high stool near the counter, you can not really see the train. The train tracks are very small too. When I went the train was not working, so we basicly paid $25 on some onion rings and burger...the kids did not enjoy it. Remember you go there to look at the trains not for the food.

Needless to say, this is not the place to be if you're on a diet but it's good old fashioned comfort food at it's finest. Oh yeah, the trains. Kids love them and it is pretty cute. How could you not love a train with baskets attached to it that bring your food around. A word of caution. This place can get REALLY loud during crowded times so if you're prone to migraines or hostility when placed in a small, crowded room with a bunch of rugrats with loud music blaring, this probably isn't a good place for you. A little tip for ya. If you can, get there no later than 11. I know this is an early lunch for some but you'll be guaranteed to get a table near the train or a seat at the counter. Once 11:30 approaches you'll have to wait and if you come later than that, expect a line outside. Oh and they do NOT accept credit/debit cards. Cash or check only.

I have not been in the Choo Choo in quite some time, but from what I remember their food was pretty good. The only thing that I do not like about the Choo Choo, is that they have odd business hours. I wish that they were (still) open for breakfast and dinner.

Like most parents of little boys, my 2.5 year old son is train obsessed, so when I heard of the Choo Choo Restaurant, I knew it had to be placed at the top of our "To Do" list. We got there around noon on a Wednesday and I honestly didn't think there would be too many people there- WRONG! Thankfully, the wait wasn't anything like what I have read from others and we were seated in less than 10 minutes. (Be aware that there is no real "waiting area" so you may find yourself standing outside, so if the weather isn't the best be sure to pack an umbrella, coat, etc.) Because it is first come first serve, patrons have the option of taking one of the 6 or 7 booths or sitting at the counter, though it's to my understanding that seats at the counter are coveted so if they are busy be prepared to wait even longer. Personally, we sat along the front window and we could still see the "food train" very easily. My son had a cheese burger kids meal and completely devoured the entire thing. The meal was the burger, fries, and a refillable drink, and I think I paid $6. I ordered the grilled ham and cheese on 7-grain bread and a cup of chili because I didn't think my sandwich would come with fries. The grilled ham and cheese was good- not exceptional but what can you expect when you order grilled ham and cheese?! - and I would definitely order it again. What really stood out was the turkey chili. The chili was meaty, served piping hot, and left me wanting more- A LOT MORE! For dessert we shared a train whistle cupcake (the cupcake has a train whistle that your kids can blow) and it was seriously the most moist cupcake I have ever eaten! Nothing spectacular, but still really good- especially the extra frosting that was on the top! Our entire bill was $23 and we had more food than we could have eaten. Be advised however that this is a CASH ONLY establishment, so be prepared. The place is loud (between the train whistles that every kid seemingly has and the repeated rounds of "Happy Birthday" it is almost frenetic), teaming with children, and busy, but it is also all of the things that it promises- great food, great service, good atmosphere that's kid friendly, and a throwback to a different era. Will we be repeat customers? WITHOUT A DOUBT! Perhaps next time we will be able to escape without a train whistle that I can still hear someone blowing softly in to as he goes to bed tonight with a happy, new memory... On second thought, a cupcake and the requisite whistle is a must have anytime you visit the Choo Choo!

Hot Dogs and Hamburgers are fine, hard to mess up. Overpriced, usually a wait with no room to wait. But, the kids love it. Owner was a bit stingy in handing out a cheap plastic train whistle. When I asked for an extra one she replied, "You get one with dessert" I thought she didn't understand that I was asking for just one more whistle for my daughter who didn't have a cupcake. She repeated, "You get one with a dessert." I suppose that was her way of saying - No free whistles here. She saw we had a chocolate shake on our table and then got us a second whistle. The whistle is worth about $.03. geesh.

ive lived in des plaines for 2 years and pass the choo choo almost every day, yet never went in. i knew my son would love it, so i decided to stop in for lunch. first of all, it was a crowded nightmare. i assumed it was a seat yourself type of place and found a booth in the corner. the resturant was packed to the gills...i believe there was a little boy celebrating his birthday with about 20 of his little friends. they had 3 booths for their party and it was pure chaos. kids running, blowing their cupcake whistles, and climbing over the seats. the service was prompt and the food was nothing to write home about. greasy, but edible. i was suprised to see it was cash or check...dont most places take credit cards nowadays? to a sane adult, this place was a crowded nightmare, but through the eyes of my 3 year old, it was akin to disney world. he loved the train that circled the counter to bring the diners their food, the cupcakes with the train whistles on top and the 'happy birthday' song they play. he was just in awe of the whole experience....and that is why we went. we will certainly not be returning to the choo choo for the food...yet for the experience and the joy that it brought my son.

Anyone who has ever like trains is missing out by not giving this place a try. For one thing, you're not far from the Des Plaines Metra station. For another, your food is served to you on a model train. it's like a time machine to a 50's/60's era diner. Burgers and fries are the standard fare, and done quite well. The dessert menu is highlighted by cupcakes, which, after disembarking from the train, one finds they have cute little train whistles on top for you to blow into and give mom a headache on the way home. Lots of fun for little kids and big kids alike!

I was prepared not to like this place. The attraction is a model train that runs the length of the counter, back into the kitchen, and delivers food in baskets. Always thought it was too cutesy a concept. But, to my surprise, it's rather charming: a throwback to the small '50s-era diner (perhaps b/c it was opened in 1951). Menu is basic: burgers, hot dogs, some sandwiches and desserts. My cheeseburger was decent, and tasty fries were salty and plentiful. The ice cream sundae was simple but good. Service was very efficient: had my order in around 10 min. But the food is beside the point here. Choo Choo is like dinner theatre for the 10 and under set. Every child is given a cardboard train conductors hat. I saw one boy, maybe 4 or 5, kneel on his seat for the entire meal - the better to watch the train come 'round. You wouldn't think such a simple novelty would capture kids' attention. But it did! Lots of sprites, just grinning ear to ear. If you come on a Saturday, be prepared to wait (and to vacate your booth in 30 min. - a sign notes that management strictly enforces that time limit during busy periods). From the time my daughter was 2 until maybe a year ago we LOVED the Choo Choo. Talk about great "mom and pop" burger joint. Plus the train theme is cool. Menu is limited but food was really good. Plus if you can get the counter its really fun to have the train bring you your food. Negatives - limited seating and only take cash. Also unless you want to wait in line for a while to sit down, go early on the weekend (before 11:30am) and definitely not right after school lets out for the summer (again, limited seating thing). But once you do sit, the service and food is ultra fast. I also noted some people think it was over priced. I don't think $30 for the 3 of us to have lunch was bad, especially compared to a place like Five Guys. Plus any time you add on *malts* to a meal so too the price. No, its not McDonalds prices, but you are also paying for the experience. And the burgers are 10 times better then McDs So great burgers, awesome malts, fun experience. Its just VERY popular among families with kids so either figure out an "off" time or be prepared to wait in a long line that could go out the door and around the building.

And if you have kids, they'll think you're the smartest for knowing about this place, and then love you for bringing them there. Got a kid?(or seven) Then you have to go to " The Choo Choo!" 35 years ago, my father used to take me here, and now I take my 2 boys. Food is homemade fair, suited to kids tastes, but parents can always find themselves satisfied too. Turkey chili is my fav, with a grilled cheese on seven grain bread taking 2nd place.(I usually order both.). My kids like everything on the menu. Aside from that atmosphere is King! Trains that bring your food, that's just awesome!

I have been going to this restaurant for years. My father even took me when I was a child and I am 47 years old now. It is a cute idea, the train delivers you food to you. I went there one day and got there at 10:30a, the time they open so I wouldn't have to wait in a long line. We sat down, I didn't even take off my coat and they were asking me what I wanted to order. I was with my 4 year old daughter. I quickly ordered. My daughter eats slowly. She was still eating her hotdog and they told me we only had 30 minutes total and we would have to take our food to go!! She didn't even eat her birthday cupcake yet. I was furious. My bill was over $20 for the two of us. Also, I wanted to pay with a debit card. They don't take credit or debit. I then had to walk to find a cash station to pay my bill. I didn't want to take my car because the parking lot is so small and was full so I didn't want to move my car. The weather was 19 degrees. I will never go there again.The owner here has alot to learn about being a business owner. So, if you go there, plan on eating fast because you will be kicked out in 30 minutes!!! I also want to add that there were water stains all over the ceiling. The building is in need of repair. It makes me wonder if there is mold growing in there somewhere. This is a charming little place that the kids will love. My kids were thrilled when I brought them here when they were little - and as teenagers they still enjoy it! Food is very basic diner food - you do have to wait for a table, but it is just a great little spot to go to.

I went here as a kid , remember digging it. Passed by it with my kid , decided to take him here. The gag here is that it is a really old diner and it has a model train that brings your order to you. I expected nothing as far as food quality and was pleasantly surprised. The burgers were really good , the turkey chili surprisingly good. This place is tiny , I'd be surprised if it seats more than 20 people , and it was full both times I was here recently. You might have to wait for a seat. The prices were pretty high for a diner , I guess you're paying for the electricity for the train. If you're with kids , or just looking for someplace different , give this place a shot.

Brought my husband here since our son has been here. Very small place but it's very cute. All the kids faces light up once the train brings the food. The prices are a little higher then normal diners. There is not a lot of parking and I am sure it's always full. The waitress's are all very nice :)

The first restaurant I have been to that has a train running on a track carrying food to customers. Yes, they only take cash, but that is their 1950's theme. I am a child at heart and I love trains. I love the 1950's music they play. They even have a special birthday song they play for children's birthdays. For those who do not wish to sit at the counter and have the train deliver their food, there are tables to sit at. They have wonderful milk shakes with real fruit in them. I went to a hot dog place the other day and the milk shake their was more like flavored milk. You can get a healthy chili over there made with turkey and sloppy joes which most places do not offer. The staff even dresses in fifties type outfits. They even have a little moving car the children can sit and play in.

I stopped by today with my boyfriend, friend and friend's son. The kid was our excuse to check the place out but I'd have no shame going back without him now. We were there one minute before they opened because we imagined a long line at the door. Our paranoia was in vain since we were the only ones waiting for the place to open. We had our choice of seats and sat on the counter so our food could be delivered via train. The booths on the sides of the tracks also had their food delivered by train, though. My friend's son lost a lot of quarters in their toy machines. Most are empty or so full that the toys don't have room to drop. That was the only con to this place. He really loved the big train, though. Many quarters went to train rides. As far as the food, who could complain?! The burgers were greasy, crispy and cheesy.. with the best darn pickles!! I would like to claim they are better than Culver's burgers and that's close to the same price range. Culver's doesn't fill me up, though. I was tempted to get dessert but I couldn't fit it in my belly. Maybe next time..

My husband and I brought our grandson here. Our grandson (2 years old) was entertained by the train delivering the food. But Grandma and Grandpa were not impressed with the hamburgers!! The hamburger were the worst tasting hamburgers we ever had! they were greasy, tough, and tasteless. At $7.00 per hamburger (not including fries).... for our second grandchild we will take him down the street to the Metro train depot to see a real train and McDonalds for a hamburger. we loved this place! brought my girls here (twins, 5) for the first time last week. based upon the reviews, i wasn't expecting too much, be we were pleasantly surprised! it's clearly been in business for quite some time, as everything is dated. but when we sat at the counter, it was sparkling clean and the servers were super nice. i had the turkey chili (yum!) and my girls had cheeseburgers, which were delicious....because you know i sampled them! we topped it off with cupcakes complete with train whistles. a great day! tip: get there EARLY. it was crowded by 11:30 am on a monday!

My little guy LOVES trains so for his 2nd bday party we made the longish drive to the Choo Choo restaurant in Des Plaines. It did not disappoint. I highly recommend celebrating your bday here. That is if you're under 5 yrs old. We arrived before 5:30pm and just in record time. There's only a few booths that the trains deliver food to and we were lucky enough to score one of them. Just 10 minutes later we would have "missed the train" because the restaurant filled up fast. We were greeted by lovely woman who placed orders for 2 kids grilled cheese and a turkey chili for my husband. Fancy bday dinner! I decided I'd nibble on the kids food and eat later at home. Any excuse to nibble on grilled cheese. It couldn't have been more than 10 minutes when the train pulled up to our table with all of our food. The kids were oh so excited! And everything tastes better when it's delivered by a train so they gobbled up their grilled cheese and fries, which were quite good. My husband seemed to be a fan of his chili as well. Once everyone finished their meals the real fun began. We placed an order for a bday cupcake and an ice cream sundae for the bday boy's big sister. The ice cream was just hand delivered by our waitress (boring), but the delivery of the cupcake made up for it. They started playing a happy bday song and everyone in the restaurant started cheering. Then came the train...with a cupcake (complete with a candle and train whistle). If possible, I think my son was even more excited for the train than the cupcake because he could not keep his eyes off it. All this bday fun for under $25! However, it may being even more affordable next time because we signed up for the bday club (oh yes we did) where kids eat for free on their bdays. On the way way out we treated our kids for a rides on the play train up front and then headed home. I've already promised both my kids that we can go back again for their next 10 bdays. While I can't say I want to celebrate my own bday at the Choo Choo, I can't think of a better place to celebrate a kid's bday.

A little electric choo choo train delivers your food! The train cars carry baskets of food as the cook stops the train right in front of you (granted that you're sitting at the counter). This place is very small so you have a good chance to sit right next to the train tracks. If not, there are a few tables along the windows. Since it can get very busy, they enforce a 30 minute dining limit if people are waiting. Lots of families with kids come here and love it because of that neat train feature. You can't help but feel happy when their faces light up with joy. Children can also eat for free on their birthdays. Just fill out a little card and give it to the staff. A birthday song plays and if someone is available they will toot the horn along with the tune! Choo Choo has an old-timey burger joint feel. There's a simple menu that consists of various sandwiches, desserts, soft drinks, and milkshakes. Burgers are handcrafted, which is visually apparent since it isn't perfectly round. A nice touch knowing they're not frozen, generic patties. Ingredients are simple (lettuce, tomato, pickle) and it reminds me of making burgers at home or for a cookout. Strawberry milkshakes are bursting with flavor and even has chunks of actual strawberry in them. Prices are reasonable (cash only btw) and the staff is great. All of these things create a wonderful experience that you can't get at many places. A must-try for everyone. Oh, I've also heard the Space Jam theme song play here. Where else do you get that!?

Wow is this an awesome place, back to the 70's! We were there on a Saturday around noon and boy was it hopping! All the tables and counter chairs were filled, we did get lucky that one booth was empty and everyone in line wanted to sit at the counter. We settled for the booth and got our food delivered by a human, if you sit at the counter the train brings your food. We both had burgers and the turkey chili, all was good! If your not a fan and kids at a restaurant or happy birthday playing every 5 minutes this is not the place for you, but if you like a great atmosphere and good food go!

Don't mistake the Choo Choo Restaurant as a kids place only. Yes, it has kid appeal with a little train car seat and the model train track that circles the dining counter, bringing food to customers. They got serious food that appeals to both kids and adults. First off, their burgers are great. They are pressed thin, grilled crisp around the edges, and a rich meaty flavor you'd expect from Smashburger or Meatheads. Want bacon or other toppings? You can request them and customize it to your liking. Not in the mood for burgers? Try their turkey chili. I never thought turkey chili, which is usually more bland than beef chili, could taste so good. Fries are plentiful, which is a good thing with my younger son. And if that's not enough, try their apple pie. It's a huge slice with a small scoop of ice cream. Sugar sprinkled on top gives it the home-made touch and in the words of my 10 year old, it was "the best apple pie ever." And did I mention hey have ice cream sundaes and cupcakes too? Check it out. Got no kids? Come for the food. By the way, it is best to come early (11 AM) or closer to 1 PM and beat the crowds that can line up past the door. If you got kids, be sure to sign them up for their birthday meal with the Choo Choo during your visit.

This place is so much fun. I came here with my best friend for lunch and even though we were the only patrons not accompanied by a guardian or babysitter, we still had a great time. The decor is reminiscent of a small town 50's diner and if you're sitting at the counter, which I recommend, your food comes out in little baskets on... Wait for it... A train! As a 6-year-old in a 26-year-old's body, this delights me to no end. Our server was so nice. Basically everyone was. The manager and all other staff were funny and sweet and accommodating and incredibly patient, given their young clientele. I was very impressed with the service. I've also been here around Christmas and they decorate the windows with vintage-looking faux snow and lettering and the other decorations are absolutely vintage or a good replication of it. The ornaments and other (paper?) decorations looked just like the ones in my mom's Christmas pictures from the 50's and 60's. And I have to add... As a place obviously geared toward children, the restaurant wasn't loud, wasn't full of kids screaming and crying, wasn't full of kids running around. I tend to get annoyed when at an establishment full of rowdy children, and this was a pleasant surprise! I was expecting some errant cries, but NONE were uttered during my time here. A nice place to eat where you won't leave with a headache! The food was good but I honestly cannot remember what I ordered because I was so enchanted by my experience. This is a fun, kitschy place to grab a meal with a friend... No matter what their age.

This place is incredible! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. I love the concept of the train coming around the bar. I got a cheeseburger and it was sooooo good. Gosh, I was surprised to read some of the positive reviews of this restaurant. I found the restaurant to be dirty, the food mediocre at best and the owner rude. We went to celebrate my daughter's birthday, cute idea, right? My daughter placed her straw wrapper in one of the empty baskets on the train and the owner shot out of the kitchen to scold my daughter. My daughter is a "rule follower" so she started to cry. It was an honest mistake and my daughter thought she was being helpful. The worst part of our trip there was that I saw a staff member in the kitchen mixing a batch of vanilla cupcakes lick batter from her fingers and then continue to mix the cupcakes- yuck! We went there to see the train deliver our food which, of course, is cute but the whole whimsical feel of the restaurant is just missing. We will not be back.

Not only did I willingly go to a restaurant filled with little kids, it was actually my idea & I actually enjoyed myself! I've never seen children squeal with such delight as at the Choo Choo Restaurant...everyone was cracking up over how happy all the kids were. We surprised Busia & took her there for lunch. Her & Grandpa used to take the Hubs there when he was just a wee tot & she was so excited when we pulled up. It was 11 a.m. on a Sunday so there wasn't a wait and we actually snagged the last booth along the counter - SCORE! If you sit along the counter your food is delivered on the little train. Now, you don't have to be a little kid to understand that is totally AWESOME! Their burgers are similar in style to Steak & Shake but far superior, in my opinion. They were bigger & more flavorful, with that perfect crispy crunchy edge to the patty. Their onion rings are the beer battered style & oh-so-good. And the malt...oh the chocolate malt! At least one person in your party should get one and share if they are feeling generous. They don't have a huge menu, but you can check out their offerings on their website. There's certainly enough to please the kids & the kid-at-heart. Also, they are CASH ONLY & they will ring up your bill on their ancient cash register. And speaking of ancient...they have a gigantic old air conditioner that still works! I just had to take a pic of it; it's floor to ceiling & bigger around than a refrigerator. It's a tiny place & there is probably one or two people cooking in the back & there were two sweet girls working the front. It might not be the fastest service as far as taking your order or bringing over your check but the food was ready pretty quick & being delivered on a train certainly speeds things up. ;-) Oh, one last thing...it was one child's birthday while we were there and they had the train deliver her a cupcake with a candle on it and they played the Happy Birthday song over the speakers, complete with the server tooting their train whistle along with the tune. It was very cute!

I asked the waitress if I could order 1 cupcake and just put 2 whistles on it and she said fine. Next thing I know and older gray haired women I assume a manager/owner comes up and tells me and my kids she can't do it. Really a $0.10 toy??? Then she begins to bully and degrade the employee in front of my family and other guests and almost made her cry. Then we went to pay with my two kids birthday cards they sent to us and the same lady comes to our table and says "now it goes goes from bad to worse". At this point my daughter is crying and says "I don't like the Choo Choo restaurant anymore Daddy". One last problem was when I tried cheering her up so I gave her 2 quarters to buy something from the gumball machines and nothing came out. Ask about it they said they can't help. Ugh balling daughter and left. What a joke. Food was decent though.

How cute is this place! ALL ABOARD! I was looking for a fun place to take my visiting niece and nephews, and my non-Yelper friend (shudder the thought) steered me to this location. I'm so glad she did! It's simply adorable. And I also have to thank Eduardo E for his great review and tips. :-) I agree- sit at the counter so the mini train delivers its food directly to you and there's more train interaction for the kids. No touching! ;) It's a small diner so you better like who you're with or be able to handle them for at least a half hour, but the decor, staff and train make it super fun. The burgers and dogs were good and tasty, no complaints from the kiddos, but nothing too special, though very fresh! I loved me those hot, fresh, crisp yet tender fries, which they happily accommodated my request of no salt. Kids loved their root beer floats and since I'd been spoiling them with sugar all week, I opted to split their floats, with minor protests, but it was just the right amount. Even better, it came with a whistle for each child. Yup, that's fun all the way home, boys and girls. Yikes. Lol Oh, and adults don't skip that amazing apple pie. Omg, classic and yummy. The prices are fairly affordable (CASH ONLY) but probably a definitely more than your average dog/burger joint, but I'm willing to put in a few bucks more for the ambience, experience and smiles on those faces. I think we paid $60 for 5 meals with beverages, and 3 desserts, plus I tipped heftily, as it was well-earned. We even traversed the Des Plaines flooding (spring 2013) to find the joint and I'd do it again. I love the retro checkered decor and appreciate how sweet, patient and friendly the lovely servers were as we decided on our meals. I mean, if I had to wait on screaming kids all day, I'd want these people out of there ASAP- not that mine were screaming; proudly, they all did very well for Aunt Tina. Yay! But even when busy, the servers took our pic and without prompting, called the train back over in front of us. Nice touch! Thanks for a great experience, Choo Choo! When my Dad visits next, you can bet we will be making that stop again. You will know it's him cuz he will be wearing his conductor hat. No, he was never a conductor, but yes, he owns the hat. :-)

Took my five year old. We were lucky to snag a booth on the tracks. He was mesmerized. The service was awesome. The owner was there and couldn't have been nicer. Our server made sure my little guy had a great experience. Food was good too.

Rude staff. These people were only nice during their " save the choo choo" campaign when the city was going to take their lot for a police station. Looks like they forgot to save their customer service! Dirty. They try to kick you out at 30 minutes.If you get your food late they still try and kick you out in 30 minutes. They only take cash. Always an obscene wait. 45 min minimum . There have been about 10-12 people pushed up against the door way and lining the counter space half way up the shoebox size restaurant. Everyone loves hungry people grumbling at their backs, complaining how long the wait is and sometimes trying to bribe other patrons or worse guilt trip them to get ahead. Booths starting to crack and be uncomfortable. Parking can suck and the lot has huge potholes. Filled with screaming kids. Plays the same birthday song every ten minutes and blows a train whistle. The kid ride remains broken for a year. They charge a few dollars for a box cake mix cupcake that's stale. They give you sh*t about sharing food. They give you shi*t about any question or food allergy. The free birthday meal is sort of a scam. There's a minimum purchase to sit down. The fries are obviously those generic crinkle cut things from a Sams Club. No longer putting up with this crap for the kid. Did I mention gross tiny tiny bathroom?

How can you go wrong when your food is personally delivered by rail? My wife and I came here figuring it was a gimmicky kind of place that mainly appeals to kids. Though it certainly does appeal to kids, we found out quickly that it also appeals to the kids in us! We ordered burgers - they were delicious. They far exceeded my expectations. Fries were good, and the ice cream sundaes are perfect. When we were here, it was quite loud since there was a kid's birthday party happening. I would have loved a birthday party here if I was a kid. All my friends would have been envious. The kids were given little plastic train whistles and let me tell you, they are loud and obnoxious. But isn't that what kids are supposed to be? Though the food and atmosphere were great, the prices here are a wee bit on the steep side. It's a little much for us to come here more regularly, but we will definitely return with our young nieces and nephews so that they can experience Choo Choo!

The Choo Choo is a perfect lunch spot for the child or the rail fan in your life, but it's also charming, quirky, and fun in a way most people will appreciate. The egg salad sandwich is solid, the fries are crinkle cut, and their shakes are deliciously thick. Parking is also ample. Let the vintage decor remind you that as this restaurant is from another era, they are cash only. No plastic! Note: there are rules posted. Please follow them. Don't be that guy who derails the train while somebody's pie is on board!

This a cool throw-back place to bring the kids. Just be warned, it's small and the lines are long, especially on weekends and days when school is off. And it's CASH ONLY. (The true sign of a frugal business, because they don't want to pay credit card fees.) Regardless, the food is good, and for adults, I really liked the sloppy joe sandwich. Of course my kids love the trains. There are booths by the windows that are not served by trains, so if your kids want the trains to roll right up to them, you generally have to wait a bit longer to get seats at the bar. One interesting thing I noticed while waiting in line: The owners have a weird fixation on rules, and have signs all over the place to keep you in line. In fact they even have the rules posted on their web site! thechoochoo.com/arrive.h… But the servers were nice and I never felt like they were 'enforcing' anything.

I finally got little X to one, the original at that, train restaurant: Choo Choo Train. The little man was FASCINATED. I did not tell him we were going there so when he saw the train his eyes got big and he grew silent and just watched watched watched the train go by. One thing reviewers are forgetting is that this is a CHILDREN'S restaurant. 100% for the kids. That means it will be loud, crowded, a menu lacking for the foie gras crowd and some unruly children(some random child smacked little G on the back of the head! For no reason! He's only a year old for goodness sake! Control your children people!!). That being said I found the SERVICE to be excellent. And I am finicky about good service! We were greeted with a smile, the staff told us we should wait since one of the coveted corner booths was opening up soon, the table was cleaned and we ordered quickly. No complaints! This is an excellent place to bring the little people in your life. They won't remember the food, the service or the clientele but they will remember the train and that will keep then coming back. We'll be back for X's birthday since "birthday" cupcakes only go to kids who have a birthday that day. ;)

Kids love this place - if you bring them, you will not be disappointed. Seating is first come, first serve - and on the honor system. There is no process to know who is next, etc. Depending on when you arrive, this can be stressful as people hover near your table waiting for you to finish eating so they can claim your spot. CASH ONLY Service is friendly and good. Food is average and what you expect for a burger/hot dog diner. Of course, kids love the cupcakes and ice cream with sprinkles and train whistle. This is worth a visit with your kids, but if you visit on a busy day your experience may be less than ideal given the limited seating.

Arrived at 10:30 a.m. (opening) on Saturday and enjoyed a lively lunch with my sons for one of their birthdays. I wish they took credit card and I wish it was more clear the burgers come with fries already as I ordered a side of onion rings in addition to the burger basket. So we had four containers of leftovers! The waitresses were super friendly and sweet and food came quickly and very hot. It was a very good burger and we will definitely go back near everyone's birthdays since we signed up for the Birthday Club! Lots of cool railroad memorabilia and a fun choo choo whistle. The birthday cupcake and song was a great treat for my 2 year old. Thanks for being in business and giving us a local family owned option instead of that silly chain over in Naperville! :)

My parents took me here when I was little and last week my toddler got to experience it's extreme adorableness and fun. Get here early to grab one of the booths by the track or, better yet, sit at the counter. This is the first train restaurant where a model train delivers your food. I believe it opened in the 1950s and all the charm is still there! It's so cute I didn't even care how the food tasted but to our surprise the food was excellent! This place is totally authentic, you can't buy or replicate this kind of charm. They even have what I think is a real, antique train horn that they toot often during your meal. My toddler had the biggest smile the whole time and we plan to go back for her birthday. The service was fantastic. I wish I had made note of our servers name, she was so sweet. Even the owner walked around chatting with everyone. This is a good old fashioned family business and always has been. Be sure to fill out a card while there with your kids birthdays. They'll mail you a coupon for a free birthday meal. We had the egg salad sandwiches (YUM) and were drooling over the burgers we saw next to us so we may try those next time. If you appreciate the charm of yesteryear and how businesses used to be and want to wow your little ones, accept no substitute and check out the Choo Choo. Also, the Choo Choo is a block from the train so if you can take the train, I recommend it. It'll add to the fun. Oh, if you can't get a seat by the train, the restaurant is small so you'll still have a great view of the train which will only be about 4 feet away. If you get there as soon as they open, you should get a counter seat, though.

Fun place for the kids. Especially for train loving toddlers. My kids loved watching the trains. I would be great if there was a train going over the walls/windows of the tables that don't have the train delivering the food. Our kids had to stand up to even see a train. I was disappointed with the organization of the place. No one comes to take your name to seat you when a table opens up. It's almost up for grabs with the other patrons waiting in line. Staff seemed annoyed instead of accommodating. 2 out of the 3 high chairs had broken straps so I had to tie my daughter into a high chair so she wouldn't fall out. Even after being seated it took 10 minutes for them to take our order. 10 minutes is eternity with 2 toddlers and a baby.

My mom took me to the Choo Choo Train in Haiti when I was a kid! What a treat it was. The trains were fantastic, they had great burgers and the banana splits were amazing. Was just thinking about that time and decided to google. Imagine my surprise to see that they're still around and in the US no less.

Okay, so this is a great place to take the kids if you have time and patience, but if you do it is worth the trip. This is a throw back to the 40's-50's greasy spoon type diners, and it probably hasn't changed since. It's a small place with a train theme that brings the food out on a little train that runs around the counter. Really cool for the kids. Their are only about 8-10 tables and the counter in here and it fills quickly, so if you do manage to get a place to sit when you walk in you better not have a problem eating while people stand around you waiting for your table. And it's only open for five hours a day , so it's crowded the entire time. Also, it's not exactly cheap. A regular cheeseburger will run you $10 plus depending on your tastes. But...it's a surprising tasty burger, at least I was shocked at how good it was. I expected an okay burger that was more about the the atmosphere for the kids, but the 60 year old grill and quality ingredients really make this a top burger in my book. The problem is that children are the reason this place exists. They play a song with a train whistle for birthdays and have special cupcakes for the birthday boy or girl, so it really doesn't lend itself to you going on there just to get one of their tasty burgers in a pinch. But if you know a kid that might enjoy it I'd suggest you go along even if it's just for the burger!

We had my son's 2nd birthday party here this past Saturday. I have to say the owner Jean was by far the best owner I've ever worked with. She was so accommodating, and wonderful with our guests. The Choo Choo restaurant hits the spot when running around with the kidos. Tiny little diner with just a handful of tables and a bar that features a cool little (working) train that pulls the food to you. Be prepared to wait a while (esp on the weekends) and don't expect quality food. It's for the kids after all. If you're on the north suburbs near Des Plains, u have to try this joint.

Let's just start out saying this place is a staple in the Des plaines town. My grandparents use to take me here when I was younger so I thought today would be a good one take my son there. We waited like 10 min before anyone even took our drink order. We stood by the door like someone would come and seat us and after awhile we just looked dumb so we seated ourselves.It was like they all didn't want to make eye contact so they didn't have to serve us( needless to say the service sucks). This place is tiny! I mean my fiancé and I were fighting for leg room in the worlds tiniest booth. When I became crowded the line began to back up out the door because there was no place to sit. The food sucked!! I mean it's a tiny menu which is fine but at least make it decent food. My fiancé and I both got burgers I had never seen flatter patties in my life! He said if I wanted a flat burger I would of went to White Castle. This burger was drippy and gross. They are a little pricey but it was worth it to make my son happy. Oh wait he wasn't that happy because the train didn't bring his food to him. Only the people at the counter get their food brought by the train which is really no fun. One trip to the choo choo restaurant is enough for me.

I was nearby on a weekday morning and just looking for a cheap knosh. This place fits that bill. Too many reviewers seem to be looking for something beyond what they offer here, run-of-the-mill diner food. This place can only handle what little kids will eat and not much more. It should be good for them and their patient parents. I had a cup of their turkey chili (accompanied with "all natural oyster crackers" by Westminster Crackers, "baked in Vermont), which was hearty and tasty, and a tall cup of carbonated beverage. The diner is small, maybe a total of 6 tables besides the 8 counter stools. There were three groups there, all with kids. They all ordered sandwich items, which gets the show started, as those are delivered out of the kitchen on a Lionel-sized train with customized diner basket gondolas. The train then continues around the inner edge of the counter and back into the kitchen. Because I didn't come with kids and didn't order a sandwich item, the chili was just served to me by one of the waitresses. The entire place is adorned with railroad paraphernalia, particularly those related to the diner's history. On the north side is a kid-sized diesel engine that a child can sit on free. Yes. Their prices are not the cheapest, but everything that I saw or tasted was homemade, which doesn't come cheap these days. And you do have other choices nearby: a modern and a vintage McDonald's, several Mexican places, other ethnic choices, and coffee shops as well. Choo Choo has a "birthday club" that you can fill out a card for a child to get a free meal on their birthday. Some reviewers have warned that the place can get really noisy when one of those parties happens. But since the place is essentially a glass box on three sides, you can scope that out (and if there might be a wait line) before dropping in.

I've been to Choo Choo more than once. The place is small and definitely caters to little kids. It is always crowded (the place is very small) and loud. The food is okay. None of this deterred me. However, I'm not going here ever again. Why? Because the last time me and my party were in there we were completely ignored. I know the servers that were there saw us and made eye contact with us. We waiting a full 15 minutes at our table and we weren't so much as even acknowledged. We finally got up and left - it was insulting. I wrote the business directly (there's no email or form to contact them on their website). They never wrote or called back. I'm sure my business won't be missed. But hey, keep it up Choo Choo and you'll derail yourself eventually.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food is here, and to top it off it's brought to you on a train! I think I was was more thrilled by the train and the whole cool diner experience than my kids, grinning like it was my birthday and I was 5 the whole time. You know? Screw the young ones! Go here because you, as an adult who deserves a freaking break in this world, want old school basic diner food done from scratch the right way. They only take cash, so bring enough to drop the pedal to the floor. Because when you go here, you need to try everything. Look at their online menu so you know what prices to expect. Their burgers here are a serious contender to Paradise Pup. They are really that good. My wife, who almost never orders burgers, exclaimed that it was the best she'd ever had. The waitress told us that the beef was fresh and never frozen. Another reason they are so tasty, I believe, is that they use a decades old seasoned flat top grill, which sears the loosely formed patty quickly, sealing in the juices. The crisp exterior is something to write home about. And go old school and get it with cheese and raw onion, cause the balance of onion acidity with savory crisp meat and creamy cheese is real artistry. The fries were crisp and delicious, as were the hand made onion rings. The malted chocolate shake was the most flavorful and best I've had in a couple decades. If they ask you if you want whipped cream on top, shout "Heck yeah!" because it's the real thing. Real whipped cream, not that factory stuff made out of petroleum or artificial guar gum. Those massive cream molecules will undoubtedly race straight to your arteries as the malted sugar high revs your brain to 11, but it's worth it now and then right? You freaking deserve this, the shit you put up with. If you have room for desert, or even if you don't. Get the apple pie, because it's the perfect blend of flaky crust and sweet sour apples and brown sugar carmelization. And get it with their premium a la mode ice cream, because you deserve it. You really do. The shit you put up with.

My mom took us here when we were kids. It was always a fun occasion and we'd always sit along the tracks. Going back now that I'm older I would say that this place attracts people looking to check it out at least one. Still slightly overpriced in my opinion but good for a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Don't forget your cash though cause this place doesn't accept credit and has limited hours.

This is a cute place although it's very small and rather cramped and VERY old school. The counter where the train circles only seats about a dozen people and the booths behind it each seat four VERY tightly. You're shoulder to shoulder with the person next to you and you have to organize your feet in a criss-cross pattern because there's just nowhere else to put them. The main reason we went was to check it out and take my niece and nephew who are 2 and 4.5. They loved the train. The food was okay, but nothing to come running back for. I definitely think this is a "been there, done that" type of place. I can check it off my list now, but probably won't be heading back there any time soon.

Wow, I haven't eaten here since the 1970's AND they are still in business! What a day my friend Gary and I had. First we had to drive to Elk Grove Village from Milwaukee to meet with Chicago Terminal Railroad officials. Then we headed to the Choo Choo just mlles north. As we approached the tracks in beautiful downtown Des Plaines, we were greeted with a Metra Meet as an entree to the Choo Choo we could see straight ahead. From the big trains we soon dropped down to the little ones. We arrived just past 1 p.m., and entered the restaurant attractively attired in railroad memorabilia. We had just missed a birthday party and everyone looked happy, several not really wanting to leave. An American Flyer engine pulling five red food baskets ran around and around following the track along the entire counter bringing out your food. How perfect a setting, but how would the food be? Amazingly our waitress was named Jes, the same as at the Railroad Inn in my previous review. And, she was even more amazing by handling the entire restaurant without missing a timely delivery, even checking on us twice in the half fulled eatery. I ordered the regular hamburger and fries, complete with grilled onions, tomato slice, lettuce and pickle. What a hamburger! What a cheese burger! Gary was sorry he didn't order a double, it was such a perfect surprise also adding bacon to his. Even the fries were perfect, complete with a "snap!" The Choo Choo surprise is that the hamburger is scooped out from a large mound of ground beef and pressed down on the grill to form the large patty that exceeds the tasty bun. Outstanding and delicious, one of the better burgers it seems I have enjoyed recently and you know I have been favoring them. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, the restaurant reverberated as another birthday was being celebrated. The excellent speakers belted out one of the world's most popular songs as an adult celebrated their big day accompanied by train whistles as the train arrived with cupcakes topped with lighted candles. This was truly a fun place that will not break the bank. When our ticket arrived, we both said we will be back AND ordering doubles next time. We were both very happy we caught this Choo Choo!

The milkshakes are for total Fatty McFatbutt's and thoroughly enjoyable. The burgers are tastey, the fries are fresh, and the cholesterol content not recommended by the American Heart Association. What a great family restaurant! I absolutely loved coming here as a kid. I loved how the train brought me my food when I was sitting at the counter. And of course the food was good too, but when you're a kid a model train bringing you your food is so much cooler. Fast forward 10 years and I still love coming here with the little ones in my family. Every time I go here, this place is packed with little kids, and it's no wonder. This place brings back such nice childhood memories. This is a great place to come if you're looking for something the whole family will enjoy in the Chicago area!

It's hard to believe today was my first trip to the Choo Choo Restaurant. I've only heard about this place for the last 4 years of my Nephew's life. I'll probably hear about it for the next 6 years or when the day comes for him to finally be tired of trains. Everything about this place from the outside-in is vintage, right down to their antique metal cash register and old fashioned way of cooking a burger. The place is small but we still managed to find three seats at the counter, front and center of all the action. There is only one waitress. She is the jack of all trades who conducts from behind the counter. She has one short order cook to support her in the caboose. The cook doesn't use a bell or yell out, "Order up!" from the window. Instead, he operates an electric train... The place runs very methodically! My Mother odered the $6.75 Sloppy Joe. My Nephew ordered the Kid's Hot Dog. For $4.95, it comes with fries and a child size drink. I ordered the Choo Choo burger w/cheese and pickles. It comes with crinkled fries for $6.95. I asked for mayo on the side to use on my burger and fries. A coke with free refills cost me an additional $2.40. This is the only restaurant that is not stingy with their pickles. To say they are generous would be an understatement. The hamburger patty reminded me of the kind they put out at Steak and Shake, only better. You can immediately tell the difference between fresh and frozen. I'm never going to lose weight if I keep this up. I couldn't resist their homemade apple pie, made fresh daily! My Mom tried one of their cupcakes. She gave my Nephew the working whistle on top. Pink lemonade was enough sugar for a 5 year old today.

I love this place. Yes, I am not a kid, but I still dig the little train carrying out the lunches and all the train memorabilia. I like seeing the thrill in the eyes of the little kids when they see the train come past. It is one of the few places on earth that I don't mind loud kids, because here I am the interloper, reliving a childhood memory I never actually had, The burgers are surprisingly decent and so is the chili and the shakes. I would give Choo Choo five stars, but it is a tad pricey. It is a special place though. We've been here before and we'll be here again!!!

I visited the Choo Choo this past weekend with my two sons, 11 year old niece and 9 year old nephew. My niece and nephew did not care for it at all. My boys who are 3 and 18 mos were in train heaven. The service sucked. There were two people and three tables and they were so slow. You would think we ordered something so complicated. I tried the sloppy joe and thought it was good but not great. I'm a huge fan of Silver Cloud's sloppy joe so this one has nothing on it. The cheeseburger my niece had was great. Juicy, seasoned perfectly and the bread was fantastic,. Grilled cheese for the boys was good. It was definitely over priced. Cupcakes tasted like they were duncan hines box made. I probably won't go back.
